(Skennenko:wa Means Big Peace)
The Skennenko:wa Room is a student support room housed within
Kateri School. There is one teacher who works in the room providing various
services and programs to the students, grades 1 to 6.
This
teacher works in collaboration with the teachers, administrators,
and parents of Kateri
School to instill peaceful
and respectful behavior.
Students
are sent to the Skennenko:wa Room when they have a problem with
another student, feel sick, are disruptive in the classroom, emotionally
unable to learn, or for small group work.
Goal of the Skennenko:wa Room
The
goal is to establish a nurturing relationship with each child,
providing a safe place in which to explore issues, express feelings
and reflect on the impact of their behavior on self and others.
The
Student Support Teacher incorporates our Native Mohawk Culture
and Spiritual values when instilling discipline methods, so students
can develop self-respect and self-discipline of mind and body,
in turn having an inner strength and honored reputation which
is normally good.
Programs:
Second Step Program: (anti-violence program)
is used to teach problem solving skills, impulse control, empathy,
and anger management techniques.
Breakfast and Snack Program: is provided daily,
and used to do preventative and follow-up work.
Talking Circles:
Individual or small group talking circles are scheduled to discuss
issues and feelings students may have with each other and brainstorm
peaceful solutions. Small groups are
also developed to address and teach a Bullying Program.
A Divorce and Separation Support Group is also provided
to students who have issues in this area.
Individual
Behavior Programs: are also developed in collaboration
with the parents and teachers for students who require additional
support to manage their behavior in a positive and acceptable
way.
